Over the past few years, I’ve had a couple of blue crayfish. They are some of the most interesting pets I’ve ever had—from the way they look to their behavior, pet blue crayfish are very cool animals.
Below are six reasons why I think blue crayfish are some of the most awesome pets around.
1. Blue Crayfish are Easy to Keep
For starters, blue crayfish are very easy creatures to keep. They don’t need a litter box, lots of toys nor do they require frequent walks throughout the day.
You can simply put them in a fish tank (I suggest a 10-gallon fish tank) and let them be.
Yes, you will need to change the water occasionally and feed them, but they don’t require much more.
In short, pet crayfish care is pretty friggin’ easy.
2. Blue Crays are Beautiful
Have you ever seen a blue crayfish in real life? Their color is friggin’ amazing. While their bluish color will often vary based on diet, etc., their bright blue color is really nice.
3. They aren’t High Maintenance
This falls into the category of being easy to keep. Blue crayfish don’t require much from their owners, except of course food and water changes.
They don’t need to be taken to the vet. They don’t need other friends, although other tank mates can be cool. And they don’t need special food.
As a matter of fact, blue crayfish are omnivores. This means they will eat just about anything, including other fish (and probably your face if they could).
Having said that, first off, if you get other fish for your tank, make sure you get the right ones. Secondly, you can feed your pet cray vegetables, algae pellets, etc.
4. They Can be Alone
Again, crays don’t need lots of attention from anyone. These little creatures are happy just doing crayfish things.
5. Blue Crayfish are Fun to Watch
These guys can be a bit crazy. And because of this craziness, they are very entertaining to watch.
In the tank, you can watch them just run around, burrow underneath things, move rocks, climb to the top of things and jump off, and you can watch them chase other fish.
Note, crayfish are notorious for eating other fish if they can get to them. So, again, make sure you pick the right tank mates to go along with your blue crayfish. Most of the time you will want fish who are fast swimmers, swim near the top of the tank, and aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves.
6. They are the Perfect Roommate
I don’t think this point is stated enough about crays, but yes, they make great roommates, and for many reasons.
For one, they take up a very tiny bit of living space, heck, a 10-gallon aquarium is perfect. They also don’t come home drunk at all hours of the night either.
In fact, they never leave. And most importantly, they won’t hit on your significant others.
Having made all of these great points, let me also say, don’t expect them to pay you rent, these guys are broke and won’t give you a dime.
